The U.S. military says a KC-135 refueling aircraft supporting operations against Iran crashed in western Iraq, and rescue operations are underway.
The U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, said the crash followed an unspecified incident involving two aircraft in "friendly airspace," and that the other plane landed safely.
Officials and Jewish institutions across North America are calling for heightened security at synagogues after a Lebanon-born U.S. citizen crashed his truck into a synagogue and its preschool and was shot dead.
The attack on In Temple Israel in the suburban Detroit township of West Bloomfield is being treated as a "targeted" act of violence against the Jewish community, an FBI official said in a press conference Thursday.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that he thinks new Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, whose father, the former supreme leader, was killed on the first day of the U.S. and Israel's war on Iran, is alive but "damaged."
Khamenei has not been seen by Iranians since his selection on Sunday by a clerical assembly, and his first comments were read out by a television presenter on Thursday.
An Iranian official told Reuters on Wednesday that the newly appointed supreme leader was lightly injured but was continuing to operate, after state television described him as war-wounded.
"I think he probably is (alive). I think he is damaged, but I think he's probably alive in some form, you know," Trump said in an interview on Fox News' "The Brian Kilmeade Show." His remarks were published by Fox News late on Thursday.
Ayman Ghazali, a 41-year-old restaurant worker from Lebanon, had become a naturalized US citizen in 2016, after entering the country on an immigrant Visa.
Additionally, Trump said he believes Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is still alive "in some form," during an interview with FOX's Brian Kilmeade scheduled to air on Friday.
The survey found that after an initial symbolic boost at the start of the campaign, the coalition lost that gain and fell back to 50 Knesset seats.
