Kyivstar Cleared to Acquire 6 Solar Power Plants Near Lviv

Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest telecommunications operator, has received permission from the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU) to acquire six solar power plants located in western Ukraine’s Lviv region.

The total capacity of those solar power plants exceeds 100 megawatts (MW).

The acquisition aims to strengthen Kyivstar’s network resilience during potential blackouts and energy shortages. As part of this effort, the company is expanding its renewable energy capacity and previously secured approval to acquire a controlling stake in Odesa-based producer Sanvin 11.

The AMCU granted the approval following an application submitted last year, giving the telecommunications operator control over several energy companies – including Enerhopostach-Plus, Lightful, Sunlight Generation, Ternovytsya Solar, Energy Space and Ternovytsya Solar Plus – according to the committee’s website.

The solar assets were previously controlled by Ivan Torskyi, owner of the Greenville development company, and the Trofymenko family, who own the Multiplex cinema chain. Forbes Ukraine noted that the owners attempted to sell these same assets to the French energy giant Total in 2021, but the transaction was never completed.

The telecommunications giant has also expanded its digital portfolio, acquiring 100% of the medical marketplace Tabletki.ua, 97% of taxi and delivery service Uklon, as well as the Helsi medical platform, IT company Kyivstar.Tech and the Kyivstar TV platform.

‘Serious Damage’ at Poltava Gas Site After 2 Consecutive Days of Russian Attacks

The CEO of Ukraine’s Naftogaz said an overnight strike caused “significant damage,” forcing the shutdown of gas production facilities in central Ukraine’s Poltava region.

The deals are part of a broader $1 billion investment plan by Kyivstar and its parent company, VEON, spanning 2023 to 2027.

VEON said it will use the funds to upgrade infrastructure and make strategic tech acquisitions. Kyivstar serves about 22.5 million mobile users and 1.2 million fixed-line customers across Ukraine. The company’s push into renewable energy is expected to help maintain services amid the ongoing energy crisis caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion.
