Russia’s consumer health watchdog has launched an emergency hepatitis A vaccination campaign in flood-affected areas of Dagestan.
“Emergency immunization against hepatitis A has begun in disaster zones due to the recent flooding and the risk of an infection outbreak. The measure is aimed at protecting the public,” the Dagestan office of Rospotrebnadzor stated.
Priority recipients include food service and grocery workers, kitchen staff at preschools, social institutions, schools, and medical facilities, sewage system workers, emergency response personnel, and people displaced to temporary shelters by the flooding.
On the evening of April 4, the Dagestan office of Russia’s Investigative Committee reported that more than 30 people in the city of Kaspiisk had been poisoned, apparently by drinking water. Investigators have opened an inquiry to determine the circumstances and cause of the poisoning.
Heavy rains triggered flooding across the North Caucasus in late March, with Dagestan bearing the worst of the damage. Tens of thousands of residents lost electricity, road traffic was disrupted, and rail lines were damaged. About 800 homes were flooded in cities across the republic, including Makhachkala, and more than 3,000 people were evacuated.
