Quote: "I have instructed our representatives to contact the team of the President of the United States and clarify the details of Russia's proposal for a short-term ceasefire."

Details: According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine seeks peace and is carrying out the necessary diplomatic work to bring this war to a genuine end. "We will clarify what exactly this is about – a few hours of security for a parade in Moscow, or something more," he noted.

"Our proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed security for people, and a lasting peace. Ukraine is ready to work toward this in any dignified and effective format," the president added.

Background:

  • On 29 April, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader, reported that Putin had held a phone call with Donald Trump, during which Putin said he is willing to declare a ceasefire on 9 May.
  • Following the call, Trump revealed details of the conversation. According to the US president, the discussion was "very good". He said he hopes that a solution to the Russo-Ukrainian war will come "relatively quickly". Trump also said he has proposed a "little bit of a ceasefire" to Putin.
