Details: Nausėda stressed that 40 years after the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Russia is once again putting the world under nuclear threat by attacking and occupying Ukrainian nuclear power facilities.

Quote: "40 years after the Chornobyl disaster, Russia is putting the world at risk once again. From Zaporizhzhia to Chornobyl and Astravets [the town where the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant is located – ed.], Russia is weaponising nuclear energy – through occupation, attacks and damage to nuclear facilities."

Details: In this context, Nausėda called for international sanctions against Russian nuclear energy company Rosatom to prevent a repeat of the Chornobyl disaster.

Background:

  • Earlier, Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the European Commission released a joint statement ahead of the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear disaster, calling on Russia to stop attacks on nuclear facilities in Ukraine.
  • On the night of 13-14 February 2025, a Russian loitering munition carrying a high-explosive incendiary warhead struck the shelter of Unit No 4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, causing significant damage to the sarcophagus.
