The Moscow City Court has sentenced historian Tamara Eidelman in absentia to eight years in prison on charges of “rehabilitating Nazism” and spreading “false information” about the military, the independent Russian news outlet Mediazona reported.
The Nazism glorification charge stems from a video titled Razgovory o vazhnom: Den ukradennoy Pobedy (“Important Conversations: The Day of the Stolen Victory”), which Eidelman published on her channel in May 2024. Prosecutors alleged that in the video she expressed “negative information about the actions of the USSR during World War II, about Russia’s days of military glory and commemorative dates connected to the defense of the Fatherland, and about World War II veterans.”
More specifically, prosecutors alleged that she spoke about a conspiracy between the USSR and Germany and described veterans as people who lacked independence, had forgotten events, and were telling untruths.
The false-information charge was brought in connection with a post Eidelman wrote about a Russian missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv.
Tamara Eidelman is a historian and educator. Before leaving Russia, she taught history and social studies at Moscow School No. 67. Her YouTube channel has 1.8 million subscribers. In September 2022, Russia’s Justice Ministry designated Eidelman a “foreign agent.”
