Russia urges withdrawal of UN Hormuz resolution targeting Iran

Russia is urging the United States and Bahrain to withdraw a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council calling on Iran to end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Russia’s state-owned TASS, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov said Moscow “cannot support” the proposal, which is also backed by several Gulf states.

“We now call on the co-authors of the US-Bahraini draft to withdraw it and not rush decisions on it, as we don’t yet see any potential for this document,” Alimov told the Izvestia newspaper.

He said a separate Russian-Chinese draft instead calls on all parties to end hostilities, avoid the use of force and resolve disputes through negotiations.

The UN said the US-Bahrain resolution has support from Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Russia, unlike the Gulf states, holds veto power as a permanent member of the Security Council.
