Russia’s internet regulator declines to block ‘YaPlakal’ site, says court ruling failed to identify prohibited content

Russia’s internet regulator Roskomnadzor has not added the “YaPlakal” website to its registry of prohibited content, the agency’s press service told the Russian state news agency TASS.

It emerged the day before that Moscow’s Chertanovsky District Court had on April 23 ruled that content published on the YaPlakal, anekdotovstreet.com, and anekdoto.net websites was prohibited from distribution in Russia.

Prosecutors filed the lawsuit, arguing that the sites hosted material that could be characterized as degrading to human dignity and aimed at discriminating against and insulting people on the basis of national and racial identity. The court’s ruling does not specify which content prompted the case.

Roskomnadzor stated it received the court ruling on May 6 but did not add YaPlakal to the registry because the court had not identified the specific content deemed prohibited. The agency stated it would send the court a request to clarify which pages on the site contained the offending material.
