The authorities in Khmelnytskyi Oblast have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash of a Su-24M frontline bomber that killed two pilots on 16 June. Investigators have started decoding the aircraft's flight data recorder and Air Force Command has launched an internal inquiry.

Measures are being taken to decode the flight data recorder, and the examination of the crash site is continuing."

Details: A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the crash in the Shepetivka district.

The case has been entered into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under Article 416.2 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (violation of flight rules or flight preparation procedures resulting in serious repercussions).

In addition, an internal investigation has been ordered within the military unit involved and by the command of the Ukrainian Air Force as part of the criminal proceedings.

The Ministry of Defence has also established a special commission to investigate the crash.

Background:

  • A Su-24M frontline bomber belonging to the 7th Petro Franko Tactical Aviation Brigade crashed in Khmelnytskyi Oblast on the evening of 16 June, killing both crew members – a 55-year-old pilot and a 23-year-old navigator.
  • The accident occurred at around 19:05 during a training flight.
