Thales enhances the operational effectiveness and readiness of Hellenic Navy’s Hydra-class frigates

On May 25, 2026, Thales announced that it signed a contract with Greece’s General Directorate of Defense Armaments and Investments for the modernization of the Hydra-class frigates.

Thales press release

  • The General Directorate of Defense Armaments and Investments (GDAEE) signed a contract with Thales for the start of the modernization of the integrated operations system of the Hydra-class frigates.
    • Through this project, Thales will work closely with Greek industry to equip the frigates with internationally recognized solutions, such as the Tacticos Battle Management System, the NS100 radar and the STIR fire control system, ensuring optimal operational performance.
      • Thales has a long-standing relationship with the Hellenic Armed Forces, covering the Army, Navy and Air Force. Last year, the company celebrated 50 years of continuous presence in Greece through Thales Hellas.
      • The four MEKO 200HN design ships, built in Germany and Greece and equipped with Thales systems, have been in operational operation since the late 1990s. Thales will implement the Mid-Life Upgrade, providing the relevant support services locally, as domestic participation has always been a key pillar of the program. Upon completion of the modernization, Thales’ domestic support center will continue to collaborate with Greek industry to maintain the operational readiness of the Navy.

Through the integration of new sensors and the latest version of the Tacticos Battle Management System, the ships’ combat capability will be significantly increased. The sensor and battle management systems selected for the modernization are designed with high cybersecurity standards and are proven operational solutions in many NATO fleets. The NS100 digital radar with AESA* technology offers high-level early warning of the tactical situation at medium to long ranges, as well as weapons support. Combined with the STIR 1.2 EO MK2, a proven dual-frequency directional radar with an integrated electro-optical system that includes laser and infrared technologies, the ships are equipped with optimal early warning of the tactical situation and high-precision fire control capabilities.

The Tacticos Battle Management System is the central command, control and decision support system of the Hydra frigate operations system. With its latest version, the Hellenic Navy will benefit from a unique operator-centric human-machine interface, as well as a wide range of proven operational capabilities, which are already utilized by more than 25 navies internationally.

Guided by the strong relationship and trust of the Navy, Thales is committed to immediately starting the implementation phase of the project by initiating collaboration with domestic partners as soon as possible for the delivery of the upgraded capabilities.

Thales is honored to contribute to the operational effectiveness and readiness of the Hellenic Navy’s Hydra-class frigates. Our long-standing partnership with the Hellenic Armed Forces reflects a strong foundation of mutual trust and commitment. We are proud to have been selected for the Mid-Life Modernization, which will integrate Thales’ advanced technologies into the Hydra frigates’ operations system, further enhancing the Navy’s capabilities. This new operational base, based on the latest version of the Tacticos Battle Management System, will be a benchmark for the Navy’s future capabilities. In close collaboration with Greek industry and domestic partners, we are committed to ensuring continued operational readiness,” said Vincent Megaides, Thales Country Director for Greece, Cyprus and Malta.
