Aurizn will offer technical support for electrical battery systems to assist PMB in delivering advanced battery technology.
South Australian defence companies Aurizn and PMB Defence have formed a partnership to contribute to the UK’s nuclear submarine battery programme.
As part of the agreement, Aurizn will supply technical support for electrical battery systems, providing analytical and engineering expertise to assist PMB Defence’s efforts on the programme.
Aurizn’s involvement will include work to enhance understanding of battery system performance, guide design approaches, and support assessment processes.
This support will be used alongside PMB Defence’s capabilities in battery technology and programme management for the UK submarine initiative.
Aurizn CEO Rebecca Humble said: “We are pleased to partner with PMB on this important programme. This collaboration brings together the strengths of two Australian companies working to support a critical national initiative.”
The collaboration follows the Australian Government’s announcement last November of a contract for PMB Defence to partner with BAE Systems in the UK.
The two companies will examine the potential integration of PMB Defence’s nickel-zinc battery system into the design of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines under the Australia, the UK, and the US (AUKUS) alliance.
PMB Defence, a manufacturer of submarine battery systems, will also supply battery technology to other Royal Navy submarines.
PMB Defence new technologies general manager Mike Hartas said: “We are proud to continue growing our supply chain for AUKUS Pillar 1 work in Australia. Aurizn offers PMB unique capabilities that significantly enhance our technology and we are pleased to have them on board.”
In February this year, the Australian government committed A$3.9bn ($2.7bn) as an initial investment in a new submarine construction yard at Osborne, South Australia.
