Diplomats from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have visited Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge a protest over disinformation spread by Russian foreign ministry officials.

Details: On 10 July, the chargés d'affaires of the embassies of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania in Moscow jointly delivered a démarche to Russia's Foreign Ministry, rejecting public statements made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin on 4 July.

The chargés d'affaires stated that the Baltic states had not opened their airspace to facilitate strikes against targets inside Russia.

Despite the official position of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, the Russian side "continues to spread falsehoods and escalate tensions".

The three countries rejected Russia's claims as entirely unfounded.

Background:

  • Lithuania's State Security Department (VSD) previously described the Russian Foreign Ministry's claim that the Baltic states are preparing to deport Russian-speaking residents as yet another piece of Kremlin propaganda.
  • In May, Russia's Foreign Ministry said it intended to file a complaint against the Baltic states with the International Court of Justice, alleging discrimination against ethnic Russians.
  • In response, Estonia's Foreign Ministry said the claims were intended to divert attention from Russia's own actions, including its attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine.
