Former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi, 81, died on Thursday night from injuries sustained in an airstrike on his Tehran residence, Iranian state media reported on Friday morning.

Kharazi's home was struck by the "American-Zionist enemy" on April 1 as part of operations Roaring Lion and Epic Fury, according to state-run Iranian media. His wife was killed immediately, and he was left seriously wounded, being hospitalized since.

Iran did not specify whether the strike was carried out by the US or Israel.

At the time of the strike, Kharazi was head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, which advises the supreme leader on foreign relations policy.

He previously served as foreign minister for the Islamic Republic from 1997 until 2005, and before that, as the ambassador to the UN from 1989 until 1997.

Kharazi's other senior regime positions

Throughout his career, he also served as senior advisor to the Supreme Leader, head of the Center for Cognitive Sciences, and member of the Expediency Discernment Council, according to the state-run West Asia News Agency (WANA).

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim eulogized Kharazi on X/Twitter, saying that the senior diplomat was killed by "Zionist terrorist attacks," while praising him as an individual.
