Missile Strike Hits Russian Drone Production Plant in Taganrog

A missile strike targeted the Atlant Aero aviation plant in Taganrog, Russia, during the early hours of Sunday, April 19, causing a significant fire and damaging local infrastructure.

Yuri Slyusar, governor of the Rostov region, confirmed the missile attack, noting that three people sought medical assistance in Taganrog. According to the governor, the strike damaged commercial infrastructure and ignited a blaze within warehouse facilities.

OSINT analysis by the ASTRA Telegram channel confirmed that the impact occurred at the Atlant Aero plant, a specialized facility involved in the development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The plant is a high-value military target, producing “Molniya” strike-reconnaissance drones and critical components for “Orion” UAVs.

This incident follows previous attacks on the same facility in January and March of this year. Local residents reported a powerful explosion followed by a massive column of black smoke rising from the site.

Later General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed on Telegram on Sunday, April 19, that Ukrainian defense units successfully targeted several high-value military and industrial sites, including a key drone production plant in Taganrog.

The strike on the Atlant Aero facility in the Rostov region sparked a significant fire at the site. This enterprise handles the full cycle of design and testing for “Molniya” strike-reconnaissance drones and produces components for the “Orion” UAV.

Why Ukraine Needs More Millionaires, Fewer Billionaires

Where wartime innovation is generating immense wealth, there is a danger that those gains could become concentrated in a few hands. Here is what Ukraine can do to prevent that.

The Orion is a sophisticated drone capable of carrying up to 250 kg of payload, including guided bombs and missiles. The General Staff noted that damaging this plant will significantly weaken Russia’s ability to produce UAVs used for attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

Beyond the aerospace sector, the overnight operation targeted a wide range of Russian military logistics and energy assets. A major ammunition depot near Trudove in the Zaporizhzhia region was hit, alongside logistics warehouses in Mangush, Topolyne, and Mariupol in the Donetsk region, and Smile in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Ukrainian forces also successfully targeted fuel tankers near Novopoltavka and provided updated results on the earlier strike against the Tuapse refinery. The assessment confirmed damage to the AVT-12 primary processing unit and several RVS-10000 reservoirs, while equipment at oil-loading piers and terminal buildings was also significantly affected.

This operation follows an escalation in Ukraine’s strategy to degrade Russia’s military-industrial and energy logistics.

Just 24 hours prior, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed successful strikes on four large oil facilities, including refineries in the Samara region and a terminal in the Leningrad region. Those strikes, involving dozens of drones, forced Russian authorities to implement emergency airspace restrictions across several regions.

While Russian officials frequently downplay the impact of such strikes, the repeated targeting of facilities like Atlant Aero underscores the continued vulnerability of Russia’s domestic drone production lines.
