Moscow court dismisses case against Russian soccer player over cafe brawl after settlement

A Moscow magistrate has dismissed the case against former Russian national soccer team player Fyodor Smolov over a brawl at a Moscow cafe, after the two sides reached a settlement, RIA Novosti reported.

The fight occurred in May 2025 at the Kofemanya cafe on Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street. Security camera footage showed Smolov approaching two customers seated at a table, exchanging words with them, and then striking each of them.

Smolov had been charged with causing moderate bodily harm. At trial, the victim said the conflict started after Smolov was addressed informally — called “bro” and spoken to in the familiar form — when he offered to pay the guests’ bill.

Smolov reached a settlement with the victim, apologized, and paid him 4 million rubles. The victim then filed a petition for reconciliation. Prosecutors opposed dropping the case, arguing that Smolov’s conduct had “discredited the image of an athlete,” but the court ruled otherwise.
