Norway and UK plan joint acquisition of up to 30 new Joint Commando Craft

Norway and the United Kingdom are considering a joint acquisition of up to 30 new vessels for coastal operations. The initiative will strengthen the ability to operate together in demanding maritime areas in the North Atlantic and the High North.

Norwegian Defence Material Agency press release

Norway and the United Kingdom are now taking a new step in their close defense cooperation. Through the Joint Commando Craft program, the parties are considering acquiring up to 30 new vessels to be used in coastal operations.

The vessels will be able to transport personnel and equipment, land them and retrieve them from coastal areas under demanding conditions. The goal is to develop a capacity that provides better speed, endurance, survivability and manoeuvrability than today’s vessels. The vessels will also contribute to better situational awareness, target designation and operate sensor systems from the vessel.

“Norway and the United Kingdom have a very close defense cooperation. By developing a joint capacity for coastal operations, we strengthen our ability to operate together in the North Atlantic and the High North, while also contributing to increased security and stability in the region,”

Tore O. Sandvik, Norwegian Minister of Defense

Will strengthen operational capability

The planned vessels will be up to 24 meters long, have a displacement of up to 60 tons and be able to operate independently for several days.

For Norway, the vessels will be relevant to the Coastal Fighter Command, while in the UK they will support the UK Commando Force, led by the Royal Marines. The capacity will make it possible to operate over greater distances and under very different conditions, from open seas to shallow waters close to land.

“We are pleased to further strengthen the close defence cooperation between the UK and Norway. By collaborating on a joint capability for command vessels, we strengthen our ability to operate side by side in important maritime areas,” says Flag Commander Stein Håvard Bergstad, Head of Maritime Capabilities at Defence Materiel.

“This initiative will improve situational awareness and interoperability, and demonstrate our shared commitment to security and stability in the North Atlantic and the High North,”

Surveying the market

As part of the work, Norway and the UK have sent out a Request for Information (RFI), which is a market survey. The purpose is to gain a better overview of the market, current suppliers, technical solutions, price levels and possible delivery times.

The RFI will also provide insight into national and international design alternatives, as well as the production capacity at Norwegian shipyards, as the vessels are planned to be built in Norway.

This is an important step in the early phase of the program and will provide the parties with a better basis for further assessments.

“The issuance of the Request for Information is an important step forward for the Joint Commando Craft project, as we now consider possible solutions for this important capability,” says Lieutenant Colonel Rob Ginn from the Commando Force Programme.

He emphasizes that the initiative is also an expression of the increasingly close cooperation between Norway and the United Kingdom, and especially between the specialized command departments that constitute an important part of the countries’ overall security.

Part of a broader defense cooperation

The cooperation on Joint Commando Craft is part of the broader defense cooperation between Norway and the United Kingdom under the Lunna House Agreement, which was signed in December.

The agreement facilitates further development of the countries’ joint military capabilities, including through cooperation on weapons, unmanned mine-hunting and underwater warfare systems, autonomous vessels, and interoperability between future maritime capabilities.

At the same time, the agreement clarifies the UK’s commitment to contributing to security and defence in regions of great strategic importance to both countries, including the North Atlantic and the Arctic.
