Russia Says It Downed 419 Ukrainian Drones Overnight, Including 56 Bound for Moscow

Russia said its air defenses intercepted 419 Ukrainian drones early Tuesday, including 56 on approach to Moscow, in one of the latest large-scale cross-border drone attacks.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that Russian air defense units began intercepting drones heading toward the capital at around 4 a.m. local time. By the morning, he said 56 drones had been destroyed before reaching the city.

Sobyanin did not report any casualties or damage in Moscow.

The attacks prompted the temporary suspension of operations at Moscow’s Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said a drone crash in the town of Yegoryevsk set a private house on fire, killing a six-month-old child. Two children and two adults were hospitalized.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 419 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed overnight across 18 Russian oblasts and Russian-occupied Crimea. Residents reported hearing explosions in the cities of Tula, Novorossiysk, and Ryazan.

The latest wave came just days after Russia claimed it had shot down 660 Ukrainian drones between June 25 and June 26, one of the highest daily totals reported since the start of the war.

A Ukrainian drone strike also sparked a fire at an oil refinery in Moscow’s southeastern Kapotnya district on June 18.

Kyiv rarely comments on long-range drone strikes inside Russia, but has repeatedly said such attacks target military, industrial and energy facilities supporting Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine.
