Russian court designates Chechen Republic of Ichkeria a ‘terrorist organization,’ bans its units across Europe

A court in Grozny has designated the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria a terrorist organization and banned its activities in Russia.

The ruling was issued by the Sheikh-Mansur District Court of Grozny, Russian state news agencies, including TASS, reported, citing the Federal Security Service’s Public Relations Center.

The court also banned the activities in Russia of 29 of Ichkeria’s units operating across 14 European countries.

Members of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria are fighting on Ukraine’s side against Russia, the FSB’s Public Relations Center stated. According to the agency, they have taken part in “sabotage and terrorist operations” in the Belgorod and Kursk regions, as well as in “the killings of Russian servicemembers and civilians.”

Russia’s Supreme Court designated the government of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in exile an “extremist organization” in June 2024 and a “terrorist organization” in November 2024.

The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria was a self-proclaimed republic, independent of Russia, that existed on the territory of Chechnya from 1993 to 1999. It was dissolved during the Second Chechen War, after which Chechnya came to be led by Akhmad Kadyrov, the father of the republic’s current head, Ramzan Kadyrov.
