Russian journalist and politician YekaterinaDuntsova has announced plans to organize a “home protest” in support of a free internet in Russia.
Writing in her the official telegram channel, she said authorities have in recent weeks been banning virtually all forms of street protest, so she wants to express dissent without bringing people out into the streets.
“All week, open your windows at 8 p.m. and make noise for a free internet — honk, whistle, bang on pots, play music, in any safe way and within acceptable noise levels.”
She said such a protest is not formally prohibited, but “we all understand how flexibly the law is interpreted today.”
She said she has sent appeals to Russian President Vladimir Putin, State DumaSpeaker and lower-house speaker VyacheslavVolodin, Federation Council Speaker ValentinaMatviyenko, InvestigativeCommittee Chairman AlexanderBastrykin, Internal Affairs Minister VladimirKolokoltsev, and ProsecutorGeneral AlexanderGutsan, and called on anyone who wishes to do the same.
A journalist and former member of the city council of the Russian city of RzhevRzhev, she sought to run in Russia’s presidential election in 2024 but was denied registration by the Central Election Commission. She then attempted to found her own political party, “Dawn,” but the Justice Ministry refused to register it.
In May 2024, two months after the presidential election, Russian authorities designated her a foreign agent.
