Tehran’s metro system recorded more than 7 million passenger trips between Saturday evening and Sunday morning as large crowds travelled to attend funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to figures cited by Tasnim News Agency.
The funeral at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla is continuing throughout the day, with organisers urging attendees to use public transport.
Al Jazeera reported that mourners were chanting slogans including “Death to America” and “Death to Israel”, with many calling for retaliation over Khamenei’s killing in a US-Israeli strike on 28 February.
