A bill that the Knesset passed Thursday will turn the Justice Ministry's police misconduct investigation unit into Israel's first official political investigation unit. Official because for three years now, the Israel Police has already been operating as a political police force whose leaders have resorted to every means possible to please the government and the minister who overseas the police, Itamar Ben-Gvir – from harming anti-government protests to baseless arrests and strip searches of demonstrators, to deter them from taking to the streets.
