Explosives Discovered Near Serbia-Hungary Gas Pipeline, Vucic Warns of ‘Geopolitical Games’

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Sunday, April 5, that explosive devices were discovered near a vital gas infrastructure site in the municipality of Kanjiza, which connects Serbia’s gas network to Hungary.

According to Vucic, security forces found two large packages of explosives equipped with detonators. The discovery followed an extensive search operation involving helicopter units near a local lake. “If there had been a gas shutdown there, Hungary would have no gas, and we in northern Serbia would not have gas either,” Vucic stated, as reported by RTV.

The Serbian president briefed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the investigation, emphasizing that Belgrade would “ruthlessly deal with everyone” who threatens the country’s vital infrastructure. Vucic linked the incident to broader “geopolitical games,” noting that Serbia must maintain the “highest level of combat readiness” to protect its energy security.

In response, Orbán confirmed the high-level talks and convened an emergency meeting of Hungary’s Defense Council on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurs amid heightened tensions over regional energy routes. On March 11, Hungary accused Ukraine of targeting the TurkStream pipeline infrastructure. TurkStream remains a critical artery for Russian natural gas reaching southeast Europe, including Serbia and Hungary, especially as other routes face disruption due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and international sanctions.

Furthermore, the TurkStream pipeline – which transports gas across the Black Sea to Turkey and into Europe – has recently been the subject of Russian allegations regarding Ukrainian drone attacks.
