Moscow has banned the publication of photos and videos showing the aftermath of terrorist attacks and drone strikes, according to a press release from the city government.
The city’s Anti-Terrorism Commission imposed the restrictions to prevent the “spread of misinformation” and ensure public safety.
The ban exempts information published by Russia’s Defense Ministry, the city’s mayor on his official website and channels, and the Moscow city government. It will remain in effect until a “separate decision” is made, with no set end date.
Individuals who violate the ban face fines of 3,000 to 5,000 rubles; officials face 30,000 to 50,000 rubles; and legal entities face 50,000 to 200,000 rubles.
Similar bans on publishing photos and videos of the aftermath of Ukrainian drone strikes are already in effect in more than 30 regions, according to estimates by the St. Petersburg-based news outlet Fontanka.
