New Zealand expands sanctions against Russia

On Thursday, May 7, the New Zealand government imposed new sanctions against 20 Russian individuals and entities for their support of Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.

According to Ukrinform, this was stated by New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

It is noted that today’s sanctions package covers 20 individuals and entities. Among them are entities that support the Kremlin’s hybrid tactics by facilitating Russian cybercrime that supports the war and spreading anti-Ukrainian propaganda aimed at legitimizing Moscow’s illegal aggression.

“Those who misuse online platforms to support Russia’s war against Ukraine will face real consequences, including sanctions,” Mr. Peters says.

New Zealand is also imposing sanctions on an alternative payment service provider whose services are widely used to evade sanctions against Russia.

“We are targeting the payment infrastructure that has helped enable Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Mr. Peters says.

The sanctions announced today also target those contributing to Russia’s military-industrial complex, as well as entities from North Korea and Iran that provide support to the Russian military.

As reported by Ukrinform, in February, the New Zealand government once again expanded its anti-Russian sanctions, adding 23 individuals and 13 entities from Russia and Iran to its sanctions list, and lowering the price cap on Russian oil to $44.10, a level previously set by the European Union.
