Russian Drones Target Rescue Vehicle and Civilian Car Amid ‘Fragile’ Truce

Russian forces have continued to target civilian and rescue infrastructure during the final stages of a three-day US-brokered humanitarian ceasefire.

On the morning of Sunday, May 10, State Emergency Service (SES) personnel in the Myrivska community of the Nikopol district in the Dnipro region came under deliberate attack. While traveling to assist local residents, a fire-rescue vehicle was hit by a Russian drone.

A 23-year-old rescue driver sustained injuries and has been hospitalized.

The SES characterized the strike as a “deliberate attack” on emergency responders.

Drone Strikes in Sumy region

In the Snob-Novhorodska community of the Sumy region, another drone strike targeted a private vehicle, resulting in injuries to a 47-year-old man.

This attack was part of a larger surge in hostilities in the region; over the past 24 hours, Russian forces carried out more than 50 strikes across 18 settlements in nine different territorial communities in Sumy.

A fragile truce shattered

These Sunday morning strikes are part of a continuous wave of violations during the ceasefire period (May 9–11). On Saturday evening, an FPV drone struck a nine-story residential building in Kharkiv, injuring at least five people, including two eight-year-old boys who suffered acute stress reactions.

A 46-year-old woman was killed in an earlier drone strike in Dnipro on Saturday.

In Zaporizhzhia, a 67-year-old man died on Saturday morning when a drone struck his car in the Polohy district.

Putin Claims War ‘Coming to an End’ and Offers to Meet Zelensky in Moscow

Following the May 9 parade, Vladimir Putin asserted that the “conflict in Ukraine is moving toward its end” while repeating several controversial claims regarding the war’s history and potential resolution. Putin stated he is willing to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow or a third country, though he specified that a meeting in a neutral location would only occur to sign a final agreement.

While the Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting all 27 drones launched in the early hours of Sunday, the targeting of emergency services and private transit continues to complicate the humanitarian effort.

Diplomatic standoff

The humanitarian pause, brokered by US President Donald Trump, was intended to facilitate the mutual exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

While President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree ensuring no strikes on Moscow’s Red Square during the Victory Day parade to protect the exchange process, Russia has been accused of using the reprieve to regroup military forces on the Kupyansk and Lyman fronts.

The persistent targeting of non-combatants throughout the truce highlights the profound mistrust between the warring parties.
