U.S. secretary of state: We would be normalizing 'dangerous precedent' by allowing Iranian naval blockade of Hormuz Strait

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the "ultimate goals" of ongoing negotiations and military operations with Iran are to ensure Tehran "can never have a nuclear weapon," adding that the Islamic regime's naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is "illegal" under international law.

"If we allow that to become normal, we would be normalizing an unacceptable status quo and setting a dangerous precedent," he said at a press conference in New Delhi, India.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, he said, "It's an international waterway; they don't own it."

"What they are doing now is basically they are threatening to destroy commercial vessels using an international waterway, that is illegal under any concept of international law that governs us," he said.

Regarding an update about a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, he said there will be "news coming out a little bit later today" and "I'll leave it to the president to make further announcements."
