Zelensky Urges Belarus to Prove Anti-War Stance

President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Belarus must take concrete actions to demonstrate it is against Russia’s war, giving the country one week to dismantle Russian signal relay equipment located near the Ukrainian border.

Speaking during an evening address on Telegram on Saturday, June 20, Zelensky urged the Belarusian leadership to align its actions with its unofficial statements opposing the conflict.

Zelensky: Belarus must show that it opposes the war

“Belarus should act in line with what its de facto leadership is saying through unofficial channels, so that we can actually see in Ukraine that Belarus is truly against this war,” Zelensky stated on Saturday.

He asserted that the Russian equipment currently stationed in Belarus actively assists Russian forces in targeting Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.

“We in Ukraine know of four such signal relay stations in Belarus – specifically in the Gomel and Brest regions,” Zelensky said. He noted that this equipment enabled strikes on the Zhytomyr, Rivne, and Volyn regions, impacting energy infrastructure, railways, and civilian areas.

Zelensky directly addressed Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, emphasizing the urgency of removing the military infrastructure. “On his territory, along two regions bordering Ukraine, there is equipment that adjusts fire against the Ukrainian population – civilians. There are relay systems on those towers,” Zelensky said. “If he does not want to be in this war, let him remove that equipment and switch it off.”

Zelensky established a one-week timeframe for the removal, warning that Ukrainian forces will act to destroy the relays if the deadline is not met. “Every day our civilians are dying because of this. Children are being wounded. If he does not do it, we will,” he added.

Belarusian fuel supplies to Russia

Zelensky also criticized Belarus’s role in providing material support to the Russian military, specifically regarding fuel and weapons components.

“In total, just from January to May, gasoline supplies from Belarus to Russia increased thirteenfold compared to the same period last year, and diesel supplies tripled,” Zelensky said. He categorized this ongoing logistical support as dragging Belarus deeper into the conflict.

“Today Lukashenko, Belarus, is one of the main suppliers for the Russian army. Can this be stopped? I am convinced it is within his power,” Zelensky stated.

On June 15, Lukashenko had rejected the idea of Belarus entering the war, stating that any spillover of the conflict onto Belarusian territory was “absolutely unacceptable.”
