Negotiations between Iran and the United States slowed on Monday, mediators told The Wall Street Journal, as discussions surrounding Iran's nuclear program and financial relief stalled the process.

The US is pushing for firm, up-front commitments on Iran's part for the future of its nuclear program, the mediators said, while Iran is focused on relief from the US's sanctions and asset freezes.

The mediators added that one of the US's concerns is that, after acquiring some degree of economic relief, Iran will delay any conclusion regarding the nuclear issues.

Trump will not sign Iran agreement without removal of uranium

On Sunday, an unnamed Israeli political source told Reuters that, during a phone call between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump on Saturday night, Trump made it clear that he would stand firm in negotiations on his demand for the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of all enriched uranium from Iranian territory, and that he would not sign an agreement without those conditions being met.

During the call, Netanyahu also stressed that Israel would preserve freedom of action against threats on all fronts, including Lebanon, the source said.
