Russian drone crosses into Romania, crashes on residential building in Galați

One of the Russian drones launched against Ukraine overnight on May 29 crossed into Romanian airspace, Romania’s Defense Ministry said.

The drone came down on the roof of a residential building in the southeastern city of Galați, sparking a fire. Two people were injured and taken to the hospital, and residents of the building were evacuated.

After Russian drones appeared on radar, Romania’s Air Force scrambled two aircraft and a helicopter. The warhead of the Shahed drone detonated on impact, Romania’s Defense Ministry said, citing preliminary reports.

Romania’s Foreign Ministry called the incident a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Bucharest has informed its EU allies and the NATO Secretary General of the incident and requested the expedited transfer of anti-drone systems to Romania. The ministry said Romania would also take necessary diplomatic measures.
