The Ukrainian government has approved a biomethane production development programme that will run until 2035, aiming to turn the country into a major producer of biogas and an exporter to the European Union.

Details: Shymyhal said that expanding biomethane production will help the EU reduce its dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.

The programme provides for the building of new biomethane plants, the modernisation of existing biogas facilities, investment incentives for businesses and deregulation to make it easier for biomethane producers to connect to gas transmission and distribution networks.

"Our ambitious goal is to reach biomethane production of 1 billion cubic metres per year by 2030 and increase it to 2.1 billion cubic metres over the following five years," Shmyhal stated.

At the initial stage of implementation, eight biomethane plants are expected to be commissioned.

For reference: Biomethane is a renewable equivalent of natural gas, produced through the fermentation of organic matter rather than extracted from underground deposits.

Background: In March, a new biomethane plant owned by Teofipol Energy Company was launched in Ukraine. Another, the seventh such facility in the country, is expected to come online later this year.
