Details: Sybiha stated that the jury's decision to resign demonstrates "the consequences of decisions taken by leading international art platforms".
Quote: "The aggressor's culture is not neutral in the times of war and must never be utilised to serve the interests of the aggressor, to whitewash its crimes, and to spread its propaganda."
Details: Sybiha also noted that from the outset, the Venice Biennale's decision to allow Russia to participate had been "disgraceful".
"Today, we see how it continues to harm the Venice Biennale," the minister added.
Quote: "Ukraine is grateful to all those who, guided by moral responsibility and a commitment to democratic values, refuse to accept this disgrace.
We renew our call on the Venice Biennale to reverse its decision and keep Russia away. There is still time to return to a principled stance that the international art community has upheld since the beginning of Russia's brutal full-scale war against Ukraine."
Background:
All six members of the international jury of the Venice Biennale, along with its president Solange Oliveira Farkas, resigned following a controversy over participation by Russia and Israel.
The organisers of the Venice Biennale changed the awards procedure after the resignation of the international jury. Russia and Israel will also compete for the prize.
More than 20 European countries have called for Russia to be excluded from the Venice Biennale.
The European Union has officially terminated the Venice Biennale's three-year €2 million grant in response to the presence of the Russian pavilion.
