Details: Kallas said that words of condemnation alone cannot stop Russian strikes on Kyiv.

Quote: "Only sustained military support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Moscow can do that. This week, the EU has started disbursing €6 billion under the €90 billion support loan to strengthen Kyiv's defences. Today, I will propose to sanction more entities supporting Russia's military-industrial complex in response to the strikes. The more Moscow attacks civilians, the more sanctions must be imposed.

We keep raising the cost until Russia understands it cannot win."

More details: Kallas also said that staff at the EU Delegation to Ukraine in Kyiv are safe and thanked them for working in such difficult conditions.

Background:

  • Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged Western partners to urgently provide Ukraine with air defence systems.
  • Thirteen people were killed and 86 injured in a Russian strike on the city of Kyiv on the night of 1-2 July.
  • Russia launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv Oblast on the night of 1-2 July using attack drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Damage and destruction caused by the attack was recorded in five districts of Kyiv Oblast.
