Low-flying, slow-moving small objects had been observed in the Finnish airspace in the maritime area and in southeastern Finland on Sunday morning. One drone crashed to the ground north of Kouvola and another east of the city.
The eastern parts of the Kouvola region are located approximately 40-50 kilometres (25 miles) from the Russian border.
Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said on Sunday that due to Russian electronic interference, it may be Ukrainian drones. “That is likely the case, but the Armed Forces and the authorities are now investigating the incident,” Orpo said on Yle’s Prime Minister’s Questions radio program.
According to Orpo, Finland did not shoot down the drones and that they must have fallen.
The Finnish Ministry of Defence described it as a suspected territorial violation.
“Unmanned drones have strayed into Finnish territory. An investigation continues and more information will be provided when the information has been confirmed,” Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen said in a press release on Sunday, according to Yle.
