Zelensky Proposes Energy Truce, Slams Russia for Ignoring Easter Peace Bid

President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a ceasefire relating to attacks on the energy sector in his daily speech to the Ukrainian people on Monday evening, March 6 – proposal he submitted to US mediators, who reportedly passed it on to the Russian side.

“If Russia is willing to stop attacking our energy sector, we will refrain from similar attacks”, Zelensky said.

In the speech, Zelensky reiterated the offer to Russia of a ceasefire at least for Easter – “this special time of year”, he emphasized – but noted “that for Russia, all times seemed to be alike and that nothing was sacred”.

Zelensky continued saying that Ukraine is also working strongly right now with the US side concerning strengthening of security guarantees.

He also expressed thanks for the support from partners who continue to apply pressure through their own methods – appropriate sanctions, stopping tankers, and restrictions on the supply of advanced equipment to Russia.

Ukraine is holding to its Easter ceasefire proposal despite Russia’s “unreadiness,” Zelensky said at the end of last week, noting Kyiv passed the plan to Washington to relay to Moscow.

“We’ve all seen their response in the media: They seem not ready for this. I don’t know how serious it is. We’ve conveyed our request to the American side,” Zelensky said.

“I don’t know if they’ve had a chance to communicate with the Russians yet. We’ll see. Our proposal for a ceasefire over Easter remains,” he added.

Zelensky’s remarks came after a Russian drone attack involving 339 UAVs on April 1, which he called Moscow’s “response to diplomatic efforts.” Lutsk and several other regions – including Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Poltava – were hit.

“This overnight attack is actually Russia’s response to diplomatic efforts. We proposed a ceasefire for Easter – in response we get Shaheds,” he said.

He added that Russia remains a global threat and continues to undermine peace efforts.

“Ukraine is working with partners to expand joint capabilities to protect lives, while Russia drags out the war in Europe and openly invests in supporting the Iranian regime in fomenting conflict in the Middle East and the Gulf,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky proposed the Easter ceasefire last Monday, including energy protections, while signaling openness to a broader truce if Ukraine’s “dignity and sovereignty” are respected.

“We are ready for a ceasefire for the Easter holidays. Normal people who respect life talk about ending the war, not just a few days of peace,” he said.

“We are open to a complete ceasefire – on missiles, drones, food, and energy – across all sectors. If Russia is ready, we are ready,” Zelensky added.

Despite multiple ceasefire attempts since 2022 – including failed Istanbul talks and a rejected UN Easter proposal – no lasting truce has been achieved.
