Quote: "The upcoming sanctions packages are undoubtedly the most critical. The 20th package has been adopted, the 21st is being drafted, and it will be quite tough, particularly regarding energy resources."

Details: Tsahkna's comments on the upcoming sanctions package against Russia came in the context of the change of government in Hungary, where Viktor Orbán's long-standing government will be replaced by Péter Magyar and his party, Tisza.

The foreign minister noted that Europe must take advantage of the political changes in Hungary to secure the decisions necessary to support Ukraine.

Background:

  • On 23 April, the Council of the European Union approved amendments to the EU's long-term budget for 2021-2027 by written procedure, enabling the provision of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine in 2026-2027, and adopted the EU's 20th Russia sanctions package.
  • The 20th sanctions package contains more than 100 individual restrictions, increased pressure on the energy sector and the shadow fleet, and new measures against financial institutions in third countries and companies supporting the Russian military-industrial complex.
  • Following this, it emerged that the EU has begun work on a new package of sanctions against Russia.
